The Sustainability department is responsible for developing the sustainability strategy and plans for NYPA and the Canal Corp., managing performance and preparing annual reports. The Sustainability program aligns with and supports the strategic vision and New York State’s ambitious climate and energy goals. The Lead Sustainability Analyst is responsible for managing the climate and energy program areas and works on a variety of projects and initiatives. These include:
Developing a comprehensive greenhouse inventory that meets full reporting standards
Analyzing energy use and greenhouse emissions across the value chain and identifying opportunities to reduce the organization’s carbon footprint
Assessing climate change impacts and developing climate resilience and adaptation plans
The Lead Sustainability Analyst is expected to serve as a strategic sustainability advisor to business units and departments across the organization, providing guidance and analytical support in defining goals, targets and metrics, identifying strategies, developing programs, and measuring and reporting progress. The Lead Sustainability Analyst also leadscross-business unit/department teams in the development and management of new programs and initiatives that fall within specified program areas.Responsibilities vary by project and may include research, preparation of reports and presentations, and development of training resources.
The Lead Sustainability Analyst is expected to be well-organized, exhibit a keen attention to detail, and display a strong interest in finding ways to optimize data gathering and reporting processes where needed.
Responsibilities
Serve as strategic advisor to business units and departments in the development and assessment of goals, targets, strategies, and programs.
Under the guidance of the Director of Sustainability, lead interdepartmental teams in the development of new programs and initiatives.
Manage projects across business units and departments: define project scope, develop detailed work plans, and lead project teams involving multiple stakeholders.
Responsible for day-to-day decision-making and prioritization of activities related to projects. Measure and monitor the progress of deliverables. Provide project updates and seek guidance from Director of Sustainability on more complex issues.
Conduct analysis of NYPA’s operational performance, including statistical analysis and cost/benefit analysis.
Perform special/advanced analyses as directed by the Director of Sustainability.
Develop tools and resources for data and performance management.
Research and analyze industry data to support the development of strategy, policies and programs.
Participate in internal and external working groups and committees, and represent the Director of Sustainability on working groups and committees as needed.
Support the Sustainability group by leading department teams in developing assigned projects.
Support the Director of Sustainability by coordinating inter-departmental initiatives and overseeing and/or supporting the work of project teams.
Deliver presentations and lead meetings as a delegate of the Director of Sustainability as needed.
Support the Director and the VP Environmental Justice & Sustainability by preparing presentations and briefing materials on a variety of sustainability topics.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Exceptional analytical and quantitative skills, including proficiency in statistical and cost/benefit analysis.
Ability to establish strategic benchmarks, develop past and future performance trends, and make recommendations regarding targets and KPIs.
Proficiency in greenhouse gas accounting.
Excellent organizational and project management skills; ability to handle significant work load with multiple projects, timelines and due dates.
Knowledge of formal project management practices, such as Project Management Institute (PMI) preferred.
Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize among competing needs and proactively address issues.
Resourceful with demonstrated ability to manage complex problems and recommend solutions.
Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills; ability to summarize complicated matters for a variety of audiences.
Ability to work with all levels of the organization.
Advanced knowledge of energy, climate and sustainability (environmental, social, governance and economic) issues.
Advanced knowledge of corporate sustainability and sustainable operations.
Knowledge and understanding of corporate policies, procedures and business practices.
Understanding of NYPA’s business model and operations preferred.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Bachelor’s Degree in sustainability, engineering, environmental science, economics, or related field.
Graduate degree in sustainability or related field preferred
Minimum 6 years of experience in data analytics and project management.
Minimum 4 years of direct experience in corporate sustainability and sustainable operations.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Energy/utility industry experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
Approximately 10% travel primarily within New York State.
