Overview:
The Physics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking to fill a senior R&D position in the Fundamental Physics Section, Relativistic Nuclear Physics Group for work on experiments in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and/or electron-ion reactions at the future Electron Ion Collider. This is a full-time position based on site at ORNL. Key activities include providing leadership within ORNL and within the scientific community in the analysis and publication of physics results from on-going experiments, operation of existing experimental systems, and development of detectors and physics programs for future experiments.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
As part of our research team, you will:
- Collaborate with ORNL Relativistic Nuclear Physics team members in the design, proposal, funding, development, and construction of new experiments and new detector systems
- Lead the investigation and development of proposed agendas for future research initiatives
- Guide and manage physics analysis team efforts on existing experiments
- Coordinate the analysis of data from existing experiments and guide the publication of physics results, in concert with group members and international collaborators
- Represent the ORNL Relativistic Nuclear Physics Group at DOE scientific or project reviews, meetings with Long Range Planning Committees, and at scientific meetings and conferences as needed
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, and health regulations
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Nuclear Physics or in a closely related discipline (e.g. nuclear chemistry or particle physics) with a minimum of 6 years of experience past PhD conferral
Preferred Qualifications:
- An excellent record of leadership in relativistic nuclear physics, including notable publications in peer-reviewed journals and invited presentations at major conferences in the field
- A leader in innovative detector technology and successful experience in large scale detector projects
- A creative and productive member in the international nuclear physics community with proven skills in team leadership and personnel organization
