Policy Analyst/Senior Policy Analyst, International Climate Policy

Summary

The Policy Analyst/Senior Policy Analyst will work with the Energy and Environment Policy team to conduct policy research and analysis on international climate change and energy policy. Successful applicants will have expertise in climate change mitigation, resilience policy, and international climate policy issues as well as possess strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

The Policy Analyst/Senior Policy Analyst will report to the Director for International Climate Policy and work closely with the Senior Fellows on the Energy and Environment Policy and National Security and International Policy teams. They will also work with members of other policy teams, such as Economic Policy, to identify and develop American Progress initiatives, programs, and research opportunities to advocate for an ambitious U.S. posture in international climate diplomacy. A substantial portion of that work focuses on partnerships and programs with foreign counterparts, both in government and in research and policy advocacy fields.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform and support research and analysis on international energy and climate policy issues, including conducting literature reviews, proofreading, fact-checking, and editing documents.
  • Draft policy reports, columns, and articles to influence the policy debate on key energy, diplomacy, and international climate issues.
  • Support the work of the Senior Fellow for International Climate Policy and Director for International Climate Policy to develop American Progress’ international climate outreach program, including through policy dialogues, public programs, and joint research with international counterpart organizations. This may include substantial outreach and engagement with the National Security and International Policy team and with outside partners.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between American Progress’ Energy and Environment Policy and National Security and International Policy teams.
  • Engage in rapid response to policy developments, including drafting articles, op-eds, blog posts, and social media posts and shareables on quick turnaround times.
  • Coordinate and plan meetings and events as needed.
  • Represent American Progress in meetings with Capitol Hill staff, coalition partners, and on-the-record media to advance the team’s work.
  • Develop expertise in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in public policy, environmental policy or management, or a related field.
  • Three to four years of professional experience in international relations, climate or energy policy, or a related field are required for the Policy Analyst role; five or more years of experience to be considered for Senior Policy Analyst. Equivalent education, such as a master’s degree, or advocacy work may account for a portion of this experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in the intersection between climate and foreign policy.
  • Ability to prioritize work, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines in both an individual capacity and in a team setting.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills; quantitative skills are a plus.
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication, including the ability to communicate technical policy matters for a nontechnical audience.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70.
