Summary

The Director Integrated Smart Operations Center (ISOC) reports to the SVP of Technology and Innovation and provides advanced informational and analytic support to NYPA’s generation and transmission operations. As a Change Leader, the ISOC Director develops and implements a roadmap to provide for the continuous maintenance and improvement of the ISOC facilities and ensure a continued, high level of sustainable performance and ROI.

 

The ISOC Director works as part of the central and regional Asset Performance Management (APM) team to ensure that the ISOC services support both daily operational needs as well as longer term strategic decision-making on NYPA assets, while also focusing on building out future asset performance capabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Continuously define and communicate the role and value of the ISOC product, deliverables, and actionable intelligence to monitor and look for opportunities to improve asset performance.
  • Lead, motivate, and train staff for the continuous development of advanced analytics.
  • Foster a collaborative atmosphere to promote innovation and ensure ideas, concepts, results, and issues are evaluated and tested in an agile manner.
  • Demonstrate leadership and teambuilding to improve ways of working together on integrating processes across Business Unit and departmental functions, including asset monitoring and diagnostics, communications and network management, physical and cyber security monitoring, data management and service coordination.
  • Create a diverse workplace committed to generating excellence through diversity, inclusiveness, and collaboration to gather different perspectives.
  • Direct staff investigations of equipment failures and forced outages with an emphasis on proactively preventing reoccurrences through the use of deep machine learning, data analytics, and root cause identification to produce actionable information.
  • Day-to-day coordination with vendors and contractors for the development, implementation, and training of new asset management information systems and operation’s technology platforms.
  • Maintain a program (and easy to understand dashboards) for continuous and periodic reporting of asset health to the various stakeholders and tracking benefits derived from platforms – originated by the ISOC that prevented potential asset failures.
  • Coordinate between NYPA Strategic Operations and the Asset Management Organization for the integrated implementation of asset management solutions, both IT and OT, and alignment with overall NYPA strategy.
  • Foster strong working relationships (both internal and external) to business groups on an on-going basis.
  • Work with the Change Management team and other stakeholders to integrate insights into asset management / performance processes.
  • This position has the potential to have a direct role in emergency preparedness, incident management or response and as such will require training in the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate strong process plant technical knowledge and ability to communicate complex issues in simple terms.
  • Be an enthusiastic change champion and innovative thinker; self-motivated to implement process and procedural innovation and improvement.
  • Possess strong technical/financial management skills necessary to direct the ISOC policy.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of asset management processes and future ISOC capabilities (communications and network management, physical and cyber security monitoring, data management and service coordination).
  • Technical integrity earned through demonstrated success in maintaining large, complex projects or programs.
  • Knowledgeable in policies, procedures and business practices affecting the planning and execution of the ISOC.
  • Strong managerial, communication, and interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to work with various functional groups.
  • Ability to effectively operate within a large, dynamic environment and present to senior level management. Excellent stakeholder management skills and an ability to communicate solutions in stakeholder’s own language.
  • Ability to effectively direct and prioritize multiple projects within varying deadlines and project schedules.
  • Knowledge of APM software tools / platforms, Maximo, Microsoft Project, GIS, SAP, Crystal reporting and Microsoft Office and data visualization/dashboarding tools.
  • Excellent written and oral communication essential to communicate with senior management.
     
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor of Science in a technical degree, preferably in Engineering, (4-year degree); an advanced degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Prior experience in a role operating assets and/or monitoring asset performance is preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 10 years technical experience, preferably in the energy industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years operating generation / transmission assets or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience working in or leading a Monitoring & Diagnostic Center is preferred, but not required.
  • Prior experience in conducting Failure Mode & Effects Analysis, Reliability Centered Maintenance, and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Working knowledge and experience with implementing asset performance software and building “digital twins” is preferred.
  • Experience in bringing cross-functional teams together and identifying efficiency gains / process improvements.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • New York State Professional Engineer’s license is desired, but not required.
Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.
  • Ability to travel to project sites to coordinate with asset management and technology management teams.
