Primary Purpose:

Drives leadership and oversight of the Electric and Fuel Procurement (E&FP) team that is responsible for the management, creation and structuring of commercial transactions that are done on behalf of the Company and ratepayers for the provision of electric energy and capacity to meet retail customer needs. This strategic leadership position oversees the Origination, Portfolio Design, Energy Dispatch, and Market (CAISO) Policy functions within the Energy Supply organization.


Duties and Responsibilities:

-The Director of Origination, Energy Supply & Dispatch provides strategic leadership to the organization and is positioned to challenge the status quo, influence others and help lead the organization through change.

-Leads SDG&E's E&FP commercial and regulatory efforts to transition, right-size, optimize and de-risk the company's multi-billion-dollar supply portfolio, while ensuring equitable cost recovery. The SDG&E supply portfolio is comprised of renewable energy and conventional resources that provide energy and capacity to the region, in order to meet the State's Renewable (RPS), Resource Adequacy (RA) and GHG requirements.

-Oversees the review and execution of energy and energy-related contracts and market transactions that ensure SDG&E receives maximum benefit, adhere to internal risk policies, and meet all contractual and compliance obligations. Oversight responsibilities include departmental activities related to valuing energy products in a robust and defensible manner and accounting for market innovation and changing technologies; negotiating with counterparties complex, structured, and often long-term energy contracts.

-Oversees the group that dispatches and optimizes SDG&E's generation and contracted resources (renewables, conventional, and energy storage) within the CAISO markets in compliance with Commission-approved procurement plans.

-Ensures team is structuring transactions in a manner which meets all policy objectives, compliance and legal requirements, and produces best value for ratepayers. Seeks unique opportunities to optimize portfolio and enhance value.

-Oversees SDG&E's market policy efforts and advocacy on CAISO market design activities.

-Maintains relationship and oversees presentations to Commission energy division staff, Commissioner advisors, the CAISO and PRG (procurement review group). Reviews regulatory strategies and filings related to energy procurement. Creates presentations and reports for use with senior management, internal reviews and external stakeholder/compliance use.

-Models, leads and encourages staff development. Guides team to work with other departments for required functional expertise and sets high standards for career development activities across the department.

-Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

-Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Electrical Engineering or related field required.

-12 years of experience in positions of continuously increasing responsibility within the energy/utility industry required, including 3 years of supervisory experience required.

-5 years of experience that includes expertise in electric procurement, wholesale energy markets, energy resources planning, and/or electric and fuel resource operations required.

-Ability to motivate employees, drive innovation and lead change initiatives while maintaining employee engagement.

-Must have demonstrated interpersonal skills in maintaining and managing effective working relationships with team members of varied backgrounds and skills within the Company, as well as outside organizations.

-Requires the ability to provide effective coaching and development of employees.

-Must demonstrate independent thinking, as well as excellent organizational and analytical abilities for technical problem solving.

-Exemplary oral and written communications skills are important, along with a solid understanding of current business issues, utility design, and company policies and standards.

-Must have demonstrated abilities to represent company issues in high level meetings and regulatory hearings.
