Sr. Manager, Public Policy

Posted by: Sunrun

Posted date: 2020-Nov-18

Location: Washington D.C.

This position leads Sunrun’s regulatory strategy for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US states, in coordination with Sunrun policy efforts. Your role will serve as a liaison to Public Utilities Commissions, and strategically leading and engaging in regulatory proceedings. You will serve as critical communications for Sunrun relations with diverse external partner groups involving regulatory/policy matters relevant to Sunrun’s business operations, both in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and nationally as needed. You have a passion for both developing strong clean energy policy and mastering the technical, regulatory details behind it. As a critical member of Sunrun’s growing public policy team, you’ll be on the front lines of building a model distributed clean energy future.

This is who we are:

If change means solving one of the biggest challenges of our time by reinventing the way people power their homes, then we say bring it on. It doesn’t hurt that we’re reducing carbon emissions, adding new jobs to the economy, and having fun while doing it. In 2007, Sunrun co-Founders Ed Fenster and Lynn Jurich set out to make home solar mainstream. Upfront cost was a huge barrier to home solar adoption, so they invented the model now known as "solar service." Sunrun allows homeowners to pay for solar power, not the panels. This means Sunrun owns, maintains, and monitors the system while homeowners pay for the electricity it produces. Each business day, we install $2 million worth of solar and facilitate one solar installation every 10 minutes. Our network of more than 30 leading solar installers employs more than 3,000 people.

This is what you’ll do as part of the team:

  • Master existing regulations and regulatory proceedings that impact Sunrun and the rooftop solar and storage industry, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States.

  • Determine the business impact of regulatory proposals and take the lead in crafting Sunrun’s advocacy position in such dockets.

  • Lead Sunrun participation and strategy for solar, DER, and storage relevant regulatory proceedings.

  • Monitor regulatory changes and relay implications to Sunrun departments.

  • Interpret and/or prepare analyses to support Sunrun’s regulatory policy positions.

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Sunrun and regulatory bodies.

  • Lead collaboration with industry colleagues and a diverse set of external partners.

  • Integrate closely with legislative advocacy efforts to help achieve policy outcomes.

This is what you’ll need to be successful:
  • BA/BS and familiarity with utility rate design and solar policy development.

  • Ability to work directly with attorneys and technical specialists to develop solar policy positions and regulatory filings.

  • Familiarity with utility rate design and solar policy development.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong dedication to teamwork.

  • Passion for clean energy and rooftop solar growth.

While not required, the following are also preferred:
  • Juris Doctorate or similar secondary degree

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience working in a regulatory environment on energy matters

  • Proven experience interacting with and advising Commissioners and staff

  • Experience in federal energy policy issues or advocacy

  • Committed dedication to partnering with diverse stakeholders.
