In this job, you will work with a dedicated Dam Safety Team to protect the Company and the Public by ensuring the safety of SCE’s Big Creek dams and provide field and construction support to ensure dam safety maintenance and capital projects meet federal (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission - FERC) and California (Division of Safety of Dams - DSOD) regulatory requirements, and work authorizations. A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine brightly!

  • Make key decisions in the field and provide immediate direction to field personnel on dam safety.
  • Perform field inspections/construction support for dams and appurtenant structures.
  • Ensure compliance with DSOD and FERC requirements, investigate and evaluate emergent dam safety issues. 
  • Provide immediate direction to field personnel on corrective measures. 
  • Develop concepts for repair/remediation of routine issues and works with other engineering groups and/or consultants to design repair/remediation of major issues.  
  • Review designs and specifications for construction projects related to dam safety and provide on-site construction support as needed. 
  • Manage the evaluation, development, and implementation of major dam safety projects.  
  • Provide support, guidance, and subject matter expertise for construction projects related to dam safety, including review of design calculations, drawings, and specifications and provides on-site direction. 
  • Prepare critical dam safety regulatory reports and briefings to meet internal and regulatory needs. 
  • Develop, implement and manage effective maintenance strategies for individual dams working with planning units and field personnel. 
  • Evaluate dam safety instrumentation data and provide recommendations for appropriate threshold and action levels.
  • Provide dam safety training to engineers, hydrographers, civil crew members, operators, managers, and others, as needed.

The Essentials

  • Bachelor’s or higher in Engineering, Geology, or related field.
  • Nine years of related engineering experience. 
  • Three years’ experience with dam safety.
  • One year of experience with FERC and DSOD dam safety regulatory requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license and be willing to occasionally drive to facilities as far as 300 miles away.

The Preferred

  • Five or more years of experience with dams and/or hydropower projects.
  • Professional Engineering License.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable civil engineering codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Ability to independently review and validate design calculations, drawings, specifications, and work plans for civil construction projects.
  • Detailed knowledge of dam safety engineering standard methodologies.
  • Detailed knowledge of dam potential failure modes.
  • Experience with Risk-Informed Decision Making and risk assessment of dams.
  • Experience with finite element modeling of dams.
  • Experience producing engineering reports in a timely manner.
  • Experience developing and delivering technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
