Clean Energy Campaign Director

Posted date: 2020-Sep-18

Location: MA

MCAN is a Boston-based non-profit organization that works with its 60 local chapters on advocating for local and state-wide policies focused on clean energy, renewable energy, building electrification and building codes, and public energy utilities.  MCAN is a small, lean organization that has a team-based work culture, where clear communication and adaptability are important for completing work efficiently and thoroughly.

The position reports to the Executive Director.  All staff currently work remotely.

Major Responsibilities

The Clean Energy Director focuses on a municipal light plant campaign and community choice aggregation efforts.  Other issues under the purview of the Clean Energy Director include renewable energy generation (including off-shore wind) and solar zoning.

Municipal Utility Campaign

The Clean Energy Director will continue to build the Municipal Light Plant Campaign, including recruiting community teams within the 41 municipal light plant districts to build and use political power to advance energy efficiency, clean energy, and transparent decision-making in municipal light districts.  Experience with and knowledge of energy policy, state level legislative processes and municipal decision-making and regulations are key.  Being able to strategize about upcoming opportunities for improving MLP performance is highly desired.

MCAN will be publishing a Score Card of Massachusetts municipal light plants in January 2021.  This report is one of many deliverables for the Clean Energy Director position.  This position will update data collection from in-coming surveys and conduct any additional analyses needed to complete the Score Card.  See here for MCAN’s previous MLP Score Card.

Environmental Justice and Racial Equity

The Clean Energy Director will also initiate an equity-focus in the MLP campaign.  The ideal candidate possesses a strong ability to identify and address equity issues as they relate to public electric utilities; articulate and navigate environmental justice concerns; and work to move public electric utilities toward a cleaner and more equitable energy future.

Community Organizing/Relationship Building

The ideal candidate is an experienced and charismatic community organizer, with a passion for providing technical assistance and the ability to translate technical information into language appropriate for a clean energy advocacy audience, as well as the ability to work with technical experts.  MCAN supports the work of 60 local chapters by offering technical and campaign organizing assistance.  The Clean Energy Director is responsible for planning monthly educational and networking virtual events for clean energy advocates.

This position requires developing and maintaining productive relationships with advocates, MCAN partner organizations, state level agencies, municipal light boards and light managers.  Evidence of clear and effective communication is key, as is knowledge of electricity markets and utility financing.  Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods are desired, as is experience working with the media.

The Clean Energy Director will also supervise, manage and oversee the work of interns.  Experience with managing staff and coordinating successful completion of concurrent multiple projects is required.

Applications will be accepted until October 15, 2020.  Salary is $45,000.
