Organic Chemist Postdoctoral Fellow - 91079

Organization: MS-Materials Sciences

Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division (MSD) has an opening for an Organic Chemist Postdoctoral Fellow to carry out synthesis of novel, environment friendly liquid scintillators with applications in high-energy physics and detection of ionizing radiation.

Research project: In optical detection of ionizing radiation both the Cherenkov and scintillation light are commonly used. The relatively weak Cherenkov light is often shadowed by the brighter scintillation light of a classic scintillator. However, the ability to separate the Cherenkov and scintillation signals from a single target has many applications across particle and nuclear physics, nuclear nonproliferation, medical physics and photonics. This project seeks to develop a highly transparent, high light yield, novel scintillator with properties that enhance detection of the Cherenkov signal by combining traditional organic liquid scintillators with water creating the so-called water-based liquid scintillator (WbLS). The combination can allow to tune scintillation light, yield and time profile. This class of scintillators is also attractive as an environmentally and chemically friendly media particularly for applications requiring very large volume.

What You Will Do:

• Design and synthesize new organic liquids/emulsions with stringent requirements on transparency and long-term stability under scientific staff supervision.

• Apply characterization techniques to understand the composition-structure-property relationship.

• Interact with team members in high energy physics for desired optical and scintillation properties.

• Be responsive to the scintillation properties assessed by team members to tailor further synthesis

• Analyze and interpret experimental results.

• Contribute to collaborative research with researchers of various scientific backgrounds.

• Contribute to the development of research project ideas.

• Prepare reports, research papers and presentations, and present results at meetings.

• Participate in weekly meetings and regular seminars.

• Take an active role in ensuring workplace safety, and adhere to all safety guidelines, procedures, and policies. Maintain a clean and organized workspace.

What is Required:

• A recent Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, or a related field.

• Demonstrated expertise in organic material synthesis and processing.

• Knowledge of optical properties in particular, luminescence and scintillation.

• Ability to work independently to achieve project goals, meet deadlines, solve problems, and promote scientific ideas.

• Ability to effectively interact and collaborate with a diverse team and contribute to the shared goals of the team.

• Excellent verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.

Required Application Materials:

The following materials must be submitted with your application to be considered for this position.

• Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background.

• Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume.

• 3 letters of recommendation.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on October 2, 2020.

Notes:

• This is a full time, 1-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

• You must have less than 2 years paid postdoctoral experience.

• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Berkeley Lab. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.

• Work will be primarily performed at:Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
