Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environment Impacts (EAEI) Division has an opening for a Research Scientist to join their Sustainable Energy and Environmental Systems Department (SEES)!
In this role, you will provide technical and scientific leadership, applying engineering and scientific concepts, with an emphasis on developing and enhancing a broad array of tools and models related to building and industrial energy use, industrial ecology, life-cycle analysis, greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions issues, and energy/environmental/economic analysis of organic waste management system at different temporal and spatial scales.
What You Will Do:
• Conduct innovative research and display intellectual leadership in the areas of building and industrial sector energy use, industrial ecology, life-cycle analysis, energy-efficient technologies and measures, related greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, IT energy analysis, and energy-related policies for both developed and developing economies.
• Conduct in-depth engineering technology assessments of energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies and practices on a broad range of complex energy-system problems, including organic waste management, electricity demand response, and water-energy system studies.
• Conduct techno-economic research on cost, energy and resource savings, and implementation of energy efficiency technologies and greenhouse gas mitigation measures across the buildings and industrial sectors.
• Develop models and simulations for understanding the economic and environmental costs and benefits associated with integration of energy technologies and policies at various system levels and time scales.
• Author and contribute to conference papers, laboratory reports and refereed journal articles on techno-economic and life-cycle modeling of building, utility, and industrial energy technologies, and energy-related infrastructure and systems.
• Develop relationships with funders and stakeholders, manage program scheduling and budgeting of projects. Identify or respond to potential sources of funding.
• Develop and/or assist in developing presentations for conferences, meetings and workshops, and give presentations at conferences, meetings and workshops.
What is Required:
• Advanced Degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional technical experience in energy, carbon, and resource analysis or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Advanced knowledge, as demonstrated through publications in the peer-reviewed archival literature of the following: energy-related issues, life-cycle assessment, organic waste management systems, information technology-building-energy analysis, electricity demand response, air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions, and techno-economic modeling approaches.
• Familiarity with underlying factors affecting energy use and air pollutant emissions in various sectors, and in different regions.
• Knowledge of electrical grid physical and regulatory structure, as well as energy and environmental policies throughout the US, particularly in relation to greenhouse gases and renewable energy.
• Ability to quantify key drivers and barriers to development and adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and infrastructure systems.
• Understanding of basic mathematical, economic, statistical, physical, and socio-political sciences.
• Demonstrated skills in developing models using computer languages (e.g., python and r), mathematical optimization, and basic software engineering principles and approaches
• Proven communication skills as lead author of technical papers, reports, and refereed journal articles.
• Excellence in developing presentations, presenting research results and representing the group at meetings, workshops, and conferences.
• Demonstrated collaboration skills to respond to short-term client needs, work with members of project teams, and collaborate with industry and international experts.
• Proven ability to work with multiple principal investigators on several concurring projects and to supervise the activities of others, as needed.
• Ability to work successfully in an interdisciplinary environment and to collaborate successfully with colleagues and others from a diversity of fields.
What We Prefer:
• Ph.D. in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline.
