Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division (EAEI) is looking for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the Electricity Markets and Policy Department (EMP).

In this role, you will participate in and provide technical support for EMP projects, including building and maintaining energy project databases and datasets, performing analysis, and synthesizing findings.  

The EMP Department conducts technical, economic, and policy analysis of energy topics centered on the U.S. electricity sector. Our research seeks to inform public and private decision-making on issues related to energy efficiency, demand response, energy storage, renewable energy, electricity resource and transmission planning, electricity reliability and resilience, and utility regulation.

What You Will Do:
• Develop and manage large datasets and other tools, and improve tools, codes, and methods, to support the research group (e.g., facilitating effective and efficient analysis of building-level data for energy consumption, loan and mortgage performance, and energy efficiency measures).
• Develop tools to assist researchers in developing survey instruments and online databases, processing database results (characteristics, costs, savings, and technical performance), and providing other technical expertise and support for analysis of energy efficiency project and program data.
• Participate in other research activities including quantitative and qualitative analysis and synthesis of research findings.
• Assist with writing technical reports and documentation of program and policy analysis.

What is Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Engineering, Public Policy, Statistics, Energy, Natural/Environmental Resources, or a related field, and a minimum of 2 years of professional technical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated familiarity with energy efficiency and other distributed energy resource programs and technologies for electricity systems.
• Demonstrated experience developing, managing, and using energy-related software tools, datasets and/or databases, and engineering, environmental, or energy system models.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
• Demonstrated ability to learn and apply programming languages.
• Proven ability to work on innovative R&D projects, including the ability to work independently as well as work effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated by technical reports and articles, including the ability to identify and obtain information from diverse sources, interact with external stakeholders, and collaborate with other researchers.

What We Prefer:
• Specific experience with energy efficiency technologies, programs, markets, and policies.
• Proficiency with database platforms (e.g., MySQL).
• Familiarity with HTML/XML
• Proficiency with at least one of the following programming languages: Python, R, STATA, SAS.

Notes:

• This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of renewal for a total of 5 years or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
• This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
• Salary is commensurate with experience.

• This position will be remote initially but limited to individuals residing in the United States tentatively until January 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
