Director, DC High-Performance Building Hub

Posted by: Institute for Market Transformation

Posted date: 2019-Dec-13

Location: Washington, DC

The Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) seeks a seasoned professional to develop, implement and lead a strategic and long term vision for the high-performance building hub (“the Hub”) for the District of Columbia. The Director will create an innovative new platform from the ground up aimed at working with the local building community to identify and overcome barriers that are holding back high performing buildings in the District. The ideal candidate will have worked in the local real estate or building design, construction, service or management community, been constrained by these barriers in their own work, gained hard-won insight into these barriers, formed ideas for overcoming the barriers and be passionate about this exceptional opportunity to catalyze solutions to benefit the whole community.

The Director will be responsible for building and sustaining the Hub as a collaborative platform that will accelerate market transformation across the District’s building industry to enable the District to meet its green building and climate commitments and contribute to the success of DC policies including new building codes and the Building Energy Performance Standard. At its core, the goal of the Hub is to help the building industry in the District to advance high-performance buildings. The Hub has the opportunity to be a neutral convener of parties in a changing regulatory environment, which is essential when considering the multitude of disciplines and public and private stakeholders that operate in the local building industry.

The Director will have insight into how construction, retrofits, real estate, and/or building operations in DC function, what drives decision making and what levers can be pulled to advance market transformation. The Director must be an excellent communicator with the ability to understand, persuade and translate among a wide range of professionals including policy makers, architects, engineers, building owners, developers, lenders, building operators, brokers, trades, inspectors and the public. The Director must be able to quickly develop sufficient familiarity with those fields to tailor the Hub’s messages to those audiences and constructively receive their feedback. The Director must have the capacity to be an inspiring and visionary leader, effective public speaker, efficient manager and talented fundraiser.

The Director will be responsible for hiring and leading a small staff for the Hub, which may grow significantly over time depending on fundraising, which the Director will help to lead.

IMT staff will provide administrative, fundraising, communications, outreach, and policy expertise in support of the Hub as well as coaching as needed to help the Director develop needed expertise and staff capacity.

The Director of the DC Hub will report to IMT’s Director of Market Transformation.
