Research Scientist (Water Desalination) -  88852

Organization:  ED-Energy Storage & Distributed Resources

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Storage & Distributed Resources (ESDR, https://eta.lbl.gov/about-us/organization/esdr) Division invites applications for a Research Scientist to manage and lead outstanding research in the area of water desalination to support the National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI, https://www.nawihub.org/) research initiative.

In this role, you will perform innovative and detailed experimental research to develop new low-cost materials and separation processes for energy efficient and robust desalination/purification of waters from unconventional sources e.g., brackish, produced, sea water etc. The efforts will involve new materials research process engineering and device testing aimed towards water treatment process development to enable distributed desalination and associated water treatment technologies that can be autonomously operated, precise in species removal, robust in accepting a wide range of incoming water chemistries, process-intensified to reduce physical size, modular in design, and largely electrically-driven.

What You Will Do:

• Conduct research on the science and technology of desalination.

• Lead the development of advanced desalination methods via conceptualizing, designing, building, testing and manufacturing of new materials and separation devices.

• Study the fundamental behavior of salt ions and other inorganic and organic impurities in aqueous solutions, at various temperatures and pressures.

• Investigate the basic physical, chemical and electrical behavior of dissolved solids, liquids and gases at solid/liquid interfaces.

• Work collaboratively with other experimental and theoretical/computational scientists with mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering backgrounds.

• Develop and test reliable, scalable, low-cost desalination systems.

What is Required:

• Advanced Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience in experimental sciences and passionate interest in water treatment, desalination science and technology.

• Experience in material synthesis and manufacturing, including preparation of nanomaterials and composites.

• Research experience in development and testing of materials for electrochemical energy system applications.

• Strong background in materials characterization and data analysis.

• Experience in development and testing of prototypes for desalination technologies.

• Extensive hands-on experience in designing and conducting experiments.

• Demonstrated leadership skills and extensive experience in research mentoring.

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on November 21, 2019.

Notes:

• This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year Career Track (Term) appointment with the possibility of extension for a maximum of 5 years and/or conversation to career appointment, based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

• Salary is commensurate with experience.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
