Postdoctoral Fellow (ESS-DIVE Project) - 88042

Organization: GO-Energy Geosciences

Berkeley Lab’s  Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA, https://eesa.lbl.gov/) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the DOE’s Environmental Systems Science Data Infrastructure for a Virtual Ecosystem (ESS-DIVE, http://ess-dive.lbl.gov/) project.

In this role, you will join the research and development team working on community standards and extracting data submitted to ESS-DIVE.  ESS-DIVE is a data repository that stores diverse datasets from environmental sciences that include Hydrology, Geology, Ecology, Geochemistry, Biology, Climate and Geophysics.  This project works with the DOE’s Environmental System Science (ESS) community as well as the broader earth science informatics community (e.g. NCEAS, AGU, RDA, ESIP) to select or develop metadata and data formats and standards for the diverse data types, build automated parsers to ingest standardized data, enable data integration, processing and use of these datasets in ecosystem models.

What You Will Do:

• Research and provide recommendations on various existing community standards/formats and metadata for diverse environmental data types.

• Work with the community to define new environmental data standards if needed.

• Write parsers to read data files and check if they conform to standardized formats.

• Enable advanced search and visualization for data files submitted in standardized formats.

• Collaborate extensively with the ESS community to enable implementation of these standards,  including travel to meet with project teams.

• Author peer-reviewed journal articles and contribute to grant proposals.

What is Required:

• PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences, particularly hydro- or eco-informatics or other data sciences related fields.

• Experience with data synthesis, processing and analysis.

• Strong coding skills in Python. Experience with other scientific programming languages such as R or Matlab.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Established record of peer reviewed publications.

What We Desire:

• Familiarity with environmental data standards and formats such as OGC/ISO, netCDF.

• Experience with using data from sensor networks.

• Experience with integration of large data sets from different sources.

• Availability to travel for meetings at partner institutions and attending conferences.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on September 9, 2019.

Notes:

• This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.  You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
