Planning & Policy Specialist, Energy & Climate

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Wilderness Society seeks a highly detailed and skilled individual to join our Agency Policy and Planning team in Denver, CO, to analyze and help develop federal agency actions to achieve a sustainable energy and climate future for our public lands and the communities that depend on them. 

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Agency Planning for Energy and Climate, this position will work in coordination with campaign, government relations, communications, agency planning and policy and field staff to analyze agency proposals and legislation, draft comments and help develop education and advocacy materials such as reports, talking points and fact sheets.

Essential duties & responsibilities

·         Analyze agency planning and policy proposals, as well as federal legislation, impacting energy development and climate emissions on public lands and waters.

·         Help lead development of comments, fact sheets, reports, analyses, talking points and other outreach and advocacy materials to support campaign priorities.

·         Support development of equitable and inclusive policy recommendations that support public lands as part of the climate solution by contributing research, producing qualitative and quantitative analysis, helping draft informal and formal written products, and engaging underrepresented communities.  

·         Synthesize energy-related data and support efforts to use and visualize it to tell a story and advance campaign priorities.

·         Represent TWS through engagement with agency staff, industry representatives, and partners in the environmental and conservation community, including communities underrepresented in federal land planning and policy.

·         Partner with communications staff, as needed, to help prepare and review materials for digital, print and radio.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Competencies

·         Minimum 3-5 years of experience working on policy or advocacy or a related field.

·         Demonstrated experience working with communities underrepresented in public land policy and planning.

·         Proven ability to evaluate and assist in development of planning comments, legislation and other policy proposals.

·         Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work with technical experts and translate complex information succinctly and clearly for a public audience and decision makers.

·         Detail-oriented with demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects at the same time, including under pressure and with tight deadlines.

·         Strong quantitative analytic skills with experience analyzing trends in large data sets

·         Track record working successfully in teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives—across race and gender.

·         Motivated, self-starter with the ability to take initiative, develop ideas, and see them through to implementation.

·         Knowledge of climate policy and/or public lands policy preferred.
