Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology Urban Systems (BTUS, https://buildings.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Building Technologies Program Manager!
In this role, you will develop physical and informational technologies to make buildings and urban infrastructure more energy-and resource-efficient. You will develop and implement a strategic vision for research consistent with priorities of the BTUS Division and strategic funders. Specifically, you will provide leadership and management for three primary research groups (Windows (https://windows.lbl.gov/), Simulation (https://simulationresearch.lbl.gov/), and Sensors (https://eln.lbl.gov/research-areas/sensors-and-control s)) and over 55 staff.
What You Will Do:
• Engage with funders (U.S. Department of Energy, California Energy Commission, GSA, SPP) on specific projects and across a portfolio of building energy technology projects.
• Interact and collaborate with personnel both internal and external to the Lab.
• Develop long-range objectives and strategic plans for new initiatives in the department.
• Identify new national and international funding agencies.
• Manage staffing and funding plans across the department.
• Represent the division and area in meetings and presentations to visitors and lab management.
• Coordinate department-wide responses to DOE requests such as solicitations, peer- and merit reviews.
• Supervise scientists, technical support staff, interns and students to develop strong teams to perform research.
• Manage RD&D efforts to develop, characterize and analyze innovative fenestration and envelope systems in the laboratory and in real building projects
• Coordinate the preparation of proposals for funding and other activities, such as strategic planning for the Windows and Envelope Materials group.
• Oversee communication and deliverable tracking with the DOE envelope technology program.
• Serve as the main point of contact for the DOE and other clients for groups projects.
• Determine strategies for software tool development for a variety of platforms (web, pc/mac/linux) and development practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration testing, and agile development to enable wide ranging use and high impact of these tools.
• Apply engineering and scientific research principles to building energy research projects such as experiment design and data analysis.
• Support the software planning, design and implementation of improvements to the DOE energy efficiency windows software tools such as WINDOW, THERM, COMFEN, Radiance, and others.
• Consider thermal and optical needs, improvements in capabilities, and adding new materials and material properties.
• Conduct research projects incorporating both engineering principles, and energy efficiency knowledge, which includes theoretical aspects such as building physics and practical knowledge of the building industry.
• Perform data-analysis and evaluate new data science tools.
• Conduct research on the energy impacts of building envelopes using energy simulation tools as well as physical experiments.
• Present results at national and international conferences.
• Publish results in technical reports.
What Is Required:
• Master of Science in Engineering, Architecture, Physics or a related field and minimum 12 years of planning, proposal development, scheduling, budgeting and operations experience in a research technical setting years or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing field experiments.
• Experience in Building Physics, heat transfer and optics to develop and improve model algorithms for simulation and analysis of fenestration and daylighting products and assemblies.
• Demonstrated experience leading research program teams to deliver results.
• Expertise in building energy technology.
• Thorough knowledge of the building industry, including envelope construction and fenestration.
• Expertise in, sensors and controls, building computer simulation and building envelope science.
• Strong ability to shape research objectives, design and implement plans, carry out projects independently
• Broad and in-depth knowledge in the fields of both building science and software development and tools such as WINDOWS, THERM, COMFEN, Radiance or others.
• In-depth knowledge of heat-transfer, optics as applied to whole building systems and envelope components.
• Thorough knowledge of building energy simulation.
• Ability to evaluate, model, and conduct lab measurements of electrical and thermal technology energy system performance.
• Ability to identify new funding sources.
• Supervisory experience with teams.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with industry, government officials and technical staff.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and exercise professional judgment in managing, executing, and completing complex scientific projects and assignments that are primarily intellectual and varied in nature.
• Demonstrated verbal, written, presentational, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with clients and respond to their needs on short notice.
What We Desire:
• Supervisory experience with research teams.
• Experience with analyzing energy impacts of shading systems.
• Experience with building automation systems.
• Active participation in the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) and The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
• Internationally recognized expert in the field of fenestration and energy efficiency.
• In-depth knowledge of ETA’s core competencies and potential funding sources.
