POSITION OVERVIEW

Lead/Manage a group of Attorneys and/or legal staff. Collaborate with business groups in providing legal support and advice on a wide variety of matters including: general corporate matters, contracts and agreements, human resources, risk identification, and mitigation strategies, all in order to contribute to and influence the strategic direction of the organization.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide legal advice and support in connection with a broad range of corporate matters including providing advice and counsel to MISO leaders regarding general corporate matters, human resources matters and supporting the internal business functions of MISO generally
Review, draft and negotiate a broad range of contracts and agreements for client departments
Influence and drive implementation of department goals to operationally align with corporate strategy and objectives
Provide strategic direction to align processes and standards with current and emerging business, technology, security and compliance requirements to meet business expectations
Provide leadership in navigating and dealing with all levels of the organization by demonstrating appropriate discretion, decorum and political sensitivity to achieve business goals
Manage and measure process, system and/or team performance to ensure operational excellence
Work closely with MISO business functions to identify, prioritize, manage and mitigate complex enterprise-level risk to ensure effective business processes and resultant compliance
Lead, manage and deliver departmental, divisional, cross functional and cross divisional improvement projects to meet business/corporate objectives
Identify regulatory or external customer/stakeholder issues and proactively develop MISO positions in order to direct teams (including cross functional teams) to achieve desired results
Effectively network, influence and problem solve to shape outcomes and negotiate agreements with customers/stakeholders to meet business objectives
Collaboratively partner with and provide coaching as needed for attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, and administrative staff (and other employees in a matrixed organization) to ensure effective communication, operational excellence, and/or customer service is delivered
Prepare and supervise preparation of testimony, briefs, arguments, pleadings and other legal documents
Apply knowledge of fiscal and resource management to engage in long term planning and determine best budgetary and resource mix to meet business objectives
Examine, interpret and advise on laws, rulings, and regulations
Represent MISO before state and federal agencies and courts
Draft and review contracts, agreements and other legal documents for accuracy
Define and implement risk mitigation principles to process or compliance activities to ensure business continuity
Manage litigation, including the discovery production process and issuance of legal holds to preserve relevant information
Identify and report recurring customer/stakeholder issues and engage others to resolve them promptly and effectively
Ensure that appropriate process documentation is available and current to ensure compliance
Manage engagements with outside counsel as needed to achieve intended results
Forecast, allocate and manage resources to meet business needs in a timely manner
Establish the vision for the department and ensure that staff is aware of and supports this vision
Ensure development of metrics that align with achievement of long term enterprise strategies to meet business expectations.
Establish and monitor department goals that align with strategy objectives; ensuring individual employee goals are also aligned with departmental and corporate objectives
Write job descriptions, interview and hire for vacant positions in an effective and timely manner
Evaluate and manage the performance of direct reports; including creating development plans that align with the individuals professional goals and the organizations ongoing needs
Professionally exercise discretion and independent judgment in day-to-day work
Compliance with all processes, procedures, and standards applicable to the position including (but not limited to): SSAE16 SOC 1 (Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements No. 16, Service Organization Controls 1), CIP (Critical Infrastructure Protection), Change Management, Tariff (Open Access Transmission, Energy and Operating Reserve Markets Tariff), FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission), NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation), U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and NAESB (North American Energy Standards Board)
Complete all other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:

Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is required
License to practice law in any US state or the District of Columbia
Indiana licensure required
At least seven to ten years plus of related legal experience (required)
Previous demonstrated leadership experience (strongly preferred)

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge
