PROGRAM SUMMARY


SUMMARY The Conservancys New York City Program works towards a healthy, resilient and sustainable city environment. Building on the Conservancys science-based, collaborative, results-oriented approach and its record of contributing creative and effective solutions to conservation challenges, the NYC Program is working on a suite of projects that will help the city improve community resilience through natural infrastructure, enhance the environmental quality of life for all New Yorkers, and cultivate the next generation of urban conservationists. Current projects include on the ground restoration on parkland on Jamaica Bay, oyster restoration science to advance a healthy harbor, advancing natural strategies to address urban heat island, and mapping the natural assets of NYC. All of our work is done collaboratively with other leading institutions across NYC.

The NYC Program Managing Scientist provides technical and scientific support and leadership as a subject matter resource (SMR) for conservation initiatives in conservation planning and implementation. The NYC Program Managing Scientist will be responsible for shaping and implementing strategies that will protect, conserve, enhance and best utilize natural systems for the benefit of people and nature in NYCs urban environment, including increasing the resiliency of New York City to environmental changes and challenges, improving quality of life, other conservation activities and measures of conservation success. S/he supervises and manages staff members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The NYC Program Managing Scientist leads projects related to conservation planning, research and stewardship. S/he collaborates with other scientists and institutions to enhance Conservancy practices. S/he will take appropriate conservation actions to improve and increase natural habitats, preserve biodiversity, and improve function of ecosystem services for plants, animals, and human communities within NYC and the surrounding areas. The Managing Scientist will work to broaden the constituency for conservation by providing meaningful ways for members, volunteers, and other stakeholders to engage with nature and the Conservancy within the NYC metropolitan area. S/he facilitates engagement with government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations, the academic community, and the public. The NYC Program Managing Scientist will ensure that work in NYC is in coordination with the Conservancys efforts across New York State, throughout the Region, and around the globe. Specifically, while his/her focus is NYC s/he may help advise on other urban efforts in New York and beyond through a shared expertise model. This position will report to the NYC Program Director and will collaborate with a team that includes an Urban Marine Ecologist, an Urban Spatial Planner, and Program Coordinators.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
Manages the applied urban ecology and scientific practice for the NYC Program.
Supports program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment.
Hires and supervises program staff to develop and manage work plans and large project budgets.
Participates in and leads cross functional teams.
Manages projects, including grants, contracts and/or request for proposals.
Interprets guidelines, evaluates information and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances for the program.
Provides a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and ensuring workflow.
Provides training for internal and external colleagues on ecological and conservation scientific principles.
Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Collaborates with Marketing & Philanthropy departments to advance fundraising and increase program visibility.
Meets with board members and current/potential donors.
Provides support to statewide TNC conservation projects and initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's Degree in a field related to urban ecology and 4 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience designing applied scientific research.
Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting statistical or environmental data.
Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams.
Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.
Supervisory experience.
Experience managing complex projects, including financial aspects, and coordinating the work of peers and partners.
Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
Experience giving presentations to diverse audiences such as the general public, scientists, and policy-makers.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Multidisciplinary scientist preferred. PhD and 1-3 years experience will be considered, both natural and social scientists are welcome to apply.
Strong knowledge of common software applications including GIS and database management tools.
Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives, and managing performance.
Demonstrated knowledge of NYC environmental landscape both biophysical and institutional.
Familiarity with types and functionality of green infrastructure.
Demonstrated interest in the human dimensions of environmental and conservation challenges including socio-
ecological systems.
Experience translating high level goals into on the ground actions.
Experience developing partnerships (academic, community, government).
Experience coordinating volunteers or other experience working with local community members.
Networking skills with high level conservation contacts.
Demonstrated leadership of on-the-ground conservation project implementation.
Experience developing and executing new initiatives.
Familiarity with relevant local policy.
Proven negotiation skills.
Attention to detail.
Training experience.
Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
