Job Summary

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In coordination and collaboration with the Associate Laboratory Director, this position assists with lab annual strategic planning in the development of a number of operational fundamentals based on the needs of the Directorate to support research and has the primary responsibility for operations management and oversight for the facilities within the Directorate
  • Based on the needs of the Directorate this DRO may have expanded responsibilities to support the collaboration and policy development and practices of operational support within the may include but are not limited to:

o Capability development and stewardship of staff and associated facilities and equipment

o Safe and environmentally responsible operations

o Enabling researcher productivity

o Helping to insure project execution and expert delivery

o Working with the Directorate leadership team to help insure operational performance

  • Research Operations specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: Research and Operations Infrastructure development, capabilities readiness, laboratory utilization and readiness and the facility safety envelop and focus as the integration point for maintenance, engineering, projects, ESH&Q and other resources required to best support the research mission and maintaining the facility.
  • The position does provide daily operations and oversight in collaboration with the Center Directors, clients and may have direct management responsibility for Operations support teams and needs specific to the Directorate
  • Work across the specific needs of the Directorate to ensure that management reporting, safety, information flow, business processes are on track for success

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D./MS in Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or other related field, and a minimum of 10 years of related experience in commercial or government research, management, operational, and/or program development roles specific to the Directorate.
  • Strong operational/technical experience a management role in a research and development organization with ten (10) years of progressive experience in operational/technical management
  • Significant technical expertise in technologies or facilities technical components critical to the Directorate
  • Good technical knowledge and safety requirement of staff for working in highly sophisticated research environments specific to the Directorate
  • Knowledge of Laboratory operations and DOE policies and procedures and targeted client work within the Laboratory operating environment is required


Knowledge: (education, training, certifications and experience)

  • Ph.D./MS in Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, Business Administration, or other related field, and a minimum of 10 years of related experience in commercial or government research with operational oversight that included facilities and operational management support specific to the Directorate
  • Technical credentials and or certification or experience specific to the Directorate


Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in business operations, strategy, and research facility management
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience directing and managing research and development (R&D) or research operations programs and staff. Experience managing research facilities, programs, and capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a research operations support role or technical management role with a focus on facilitating R&D productivity and innovation.
  • Background in safe conduct of research operations and managing the safety envelop of research facilities. Strong understanding of the types administrative and engineering controls required mitigating risk in a research environment using hazardous materials and processes.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

This position is responsible for facilitating the development of long and short range strategic planning and implementation for operations functions for the Directorate. The position will support research with technical and managerial responsibility across the Directorate. Within the Directorate, the employee supports and collaborates with the Associate Laboratory Director, the Center Directors, supporting subject matter experts (e.g., Business Partners, Business Managers, etc.) researchers and clients to facilitate day-to-day research activities in the development, implementation, and management of efficient and cost-effective operations functions.
