DEPUTY LABORATORY DIRECTOR/

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

As member of the Office of the Director, the Deputy Laboratory Director/Science & Technology (S&T) Director will oversee all research for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and provides research leadership for the center of clean energy research with national and global impact on energy security, economy and environment.

 

The DLD/S&T Director's primary role as an Alliance Officer is to provide leadership to accomplish world class research and act with the decision authority of the Director on matters involving research and innovation regardless of where they are performed across the laboratory. Research at NREL encompasses basic science, applied research and development, testing and validation, analysis, commercialization and deployment.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as a role model for staff by the demonstration of strong leadership skills, judgment with political savvy and polish at the senior executive level as well as equal proficiency in overseeing all aspects of research and innovation.
  • Leads efforts to establish a shared vision and strategy for innovation for the laboratory.
  • Continuously assesses and identifies opportunities to strengthen the laboratory's core capabilities, the quality
    of the research conducted and its impact, and the relevance of its research programs.
  • Develops strategic programs and initiatives that drive process improvement, cost effectiveness and optimization
    of resources to support NREL's research mission.
  • Assists with the creation and overall accomplishment of the laboratory's strategic agenda.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the research business plans and strategy, organizations' structure and resources.
  • Manages strategic relationships within leading research institutions, the S&T committee of the Alliance Board of Directors, Chief Research Office Council and other committees with the Department of Energy at the deputy assistant secretary level while leading and supporting
    NREL's major goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Ensures the strategic science goals of the laboratory are achieved and that assigned laboratory goals and objectives measured through the DOE Performance Evaluation and Measurement Plan (PEMP) are realized.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must possess a PhD in science or engineering with a minimum of 15 years of related work experience.
  • Must have experience at a senior research leader level with
    a large organization for a minimum of 7 of the 15 years of related work experience.
  • A verifiable track record of leadership accomplishments as
    a senior-level leader who has proven understanding of interdisciplinary research and development, laboratory management and governance and compliance.
  • A successful track record of inspiring research, including the coordination and development of an innovative, diverse and inclusive culture to attract, recruit and retain high performing employees and collaborators.
  • A verifiable track record of accomplishments in innovation, engineering and or science at the senior leadership level preferably in the renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and markets.
  • A successful track record of developing and sustaining deep relationships with significant stakeholders, up to and including Board level.
  • An established record working with the Department of Energy or a similarly funded entity in a senior
    management role.
  • Proven experience in developing success-oriented teams with a high level of accountability within all areas of research.
  • A demonstrated ability to apply business judgment to technical issues.
