Engineer IV / Utility Designer IV

The City of Gainesville is seeking a Traffic Engineer (Engineer IV/ Utility Designer) to performing duties professional and technical engineering work in the Traffic Operations Division of our Public Works Department. The Traffic Operations Division serves the public on local traffic and transportation engineering activities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for the Engineer IV/Utility Designer include Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited educational institution with major course work in civil engineering, and six (6) years of experience in traffic and transportation engineering.  Appropriate co-op time and/or an advanced degree in engineering, business or other relevant courses (e.g. planning, public administration, etc.) of study may be recognized for up to six months of experience. The Engineer IV is expected to keep abreast of the latest Engineering advancements in the field. Continuing education required to maintain currency in assigned engineering discipline, regulatory and other related knowledge. Valid State of Florida Engineer in Training certificate EI/FEIT required. Must possess ability to earn State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE) in six months or less from date of hire. Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License required within 30 days of hire date.

The ideal candidate will have coursework in traffic engineering, experience in a public agency with a traffic management system that includes fiber-optic network communication systems, traffic signals, traffic signs and markings, and parking programs.  Experience with streetlights, and/or a streetlight system traffic, signal timing software, as well as experience in traffic management systems; preferably the NAZTEC system is also preferred. Candidates will possess the ability to work independently after receiving specific and detailed instructions, as well as working with a diverse team, to creatively solve challenges associated with the traffic operation. 

A typical work day may include assisting with parking operations, transportation, and traffic engineering activities in support of the department. This position will work with both internal and external customers.
Notes:
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is often required to sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Work may require performing tasks in and around heavy traffic.
  • Required to work during emergency conditions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
  • May require work outside of normal work schedule, including on-call and stand by status.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES: Possession of valid Florida Professional Engineer license required within 6 months of hire date. Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License required within 30 days of hire date.

Qualifications for Engineer/Utility Designer I ($48,591.00 – $72,572.00)
Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited educational institution.

Qualifications for Engineer/Utility Designer II ($53,451.00 - $79,828.00)
Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited educational institution and two (2) years of experience in traffic engineering.  Appropriate co-op time and/or an advanced degree in engineering, business or other relevant courses (e.g. planning, public administration, etc.) of study may be recognized for up to six months of experience. Valid State of Florida Engineer-in-Training ( EI/FEIT)certificate required or may be obtained within six months of hire.

Qualifications for Engineer/Utility Designer III ($58,795.00 - $87,811.00)
Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited educational institution and four (4) years of experience in traffic engineering. Appropriate co-op time and/or an advanced degree in engineering, business or other relevant courses (e.g. planning, public administration, etc.) of study may be recognized for up to one year of experience. Valid State of Florida Engineer-in-Training certificate (EI/FEIT) required or may be obtained within six months of hire. Valid State of Florida Professional Engineers (PE) license preferred
