General Manager, Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU)

Gainesville, Florida:  The General Manager is a Charter Officer of the City of Gainesville reporting directly to a seven-member City Commission. GRU is budgeted for over 900 employees with around 600 of GRU’s personnel represented by the Communication Workers of America (CWA) bargaining unit.  The General Manager is directly responsible for, and has exclusive jurisdiction and control over, all operating and financial affairs of GRU as defined in the City’s Charter. Gainesville’s City Commission seeks a General Manager with outstanding interpersonal skills, strong leadership qualities, political savvy, and exemplary written and oral communication skills. The Commission desires a breadth of fundamental business comprehension across the disciplines of utility operations, engineering, finance, and customer service. Ideal candidates will offer an engaging and accessible management style and a standard practice to empower staff and encourage a high level of diversity, creativity, internal and external communications, and broad vision for the future of the utility business model. The Gainesville Commission seeks a General Manager with a broad power supply background and a proactive stance toward energy efficiency, conservation, and renewable resources. While such experience is necessary to address future power supply challenges, attention to the economic and rate impacts such decisions will have on customers are also of high importance. Experience managing a vertically integrated electric utility with both conventional and modern generation resources would be a plus as GRU’s facilities include aging coal and natural gas-fired generators as well as a recently completed 30-year biomass Purchase Power Agreement. The City’s interview process will include participation in public meetings and candidate confidentiality is unlikely. Compensation is dependent upon experience and includes flexible health benefits, choice of a defined benefit or an employee 401(a) defined contribution and 457 deferred compensation plan.
