Berkeley Lab’s Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division (ESDR) is looking for a Research Scientist to join their Energy Storage Group!
In this role, you will explore particle level interactions from different methods of dispersion of battery and fuel cell components and follow them all the way through the casting and drying processes to final configuration and performance in an active cell. Additionally, you will guide research activities, both experimental and computational, of postdoctoral fellows and students, and oversee laboratory safety and operations.
What You Will Do:
• Lead the research agenda and AOP development.
• Write successful proposals to access beam time at the Advanced Light Source (ALS).
• Plan and conduct research at the ALS including Design, perform, and analyze X-ray microtomography and nanotomography experiments with battery materials.
• Design and construct novel experimental systems.
• Write programming code for multiphysics problems, mainly develop microscale simulations of battery operation.
• Guide and mentor postdoctoral fellows and students in developing and conducting research projects.
• Provide training on standard materials characterization equipment like particle size analyzers, ICP, TGA, and DSC equipment.
• Produce manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
What is Required:
• Advanced Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant computational and benchtop experimental research experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with X-ray microtomography, nanotomography techniques, and postprocessing of tomography data.
• Familiarity with basic electrochemical techniques, machine tool operation, and design of experimental setups.
• Experience in mathematical modeling, both in employing commercial packages and in developing custom programs, with strong programming and mathematical skills.
• Experience in modeling electrochemical systems involving concentration solution theory.
• Ability to effectively lead a team of researchers, assisting in the design and execution of others research while managing and mentoring student research assistants.
• Strong demonstrated verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work in a dynamic multidisciplinary team environment.
What We Prefer:
• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Experience with collection and interpretation of tomography data collected at the Advanced Light Source.
• Designing experiments specifically for the Advanced Light Source.
