Executive Director of the Energy Storage Center - 86313
Organization: AD-ETA Area Office
For decades, Berkeley Lab has been at the forefront of energy storage innovation and continues to lead both fundamental and applied research in the areas of electrochemistry and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Expanding upon that historic strength, the Lab is currently seeking an Executive Director to plan, execute, and manage the Berkeley Lab Energy Storage Center.
The Executive Director of the Energy Storage Center will tackle complex energy storage challenges that require new approaches to guide the science, technology and policy of systems, infrastructure, and manufacturing with applications ranging from electric vehicles to grid level storage.
Reporting to the Energy Technologies Area and working closely with Sr. Lab scientific management, the ideal candidate will be a proven leader and have Laboratory-wide responsibility to identify, engage, and harness the Laboratory’s capabilities to develop and accelerate the translation of basic and applied research results into real-world energy storage solutions. The Executive Director will develop and implement a compelling plan for the Energy Storage Center, and optimize and expand the Lab’s portfolio of energy storage research which draws upon Berkeley’s significant strengths in several relevant areas, such as energy technologies, material and chemical sciences, computational sciences and policy, and includes electrochemical, thermal, and chemical storage.
What You Will Do:
• Plan, develop, and execute the Berkeley Lab Energy Storage Center
• Develop and oversee the implementation of a strategic plan for the Energy Storage Center
• Optimize and expand the portfolio of multidisciplinary proposals addressing strategic energy storage priorities
• Articulate and develop energy storage long-term and short-term scientific/technical project and program goals
• Lead team of multidisciplinary researchers to execute scientific, technical and program development strategies
• Develop Energy Storage Center capabilities in:
- next-generation energy storage for transportation and buildings
- battery manufacturing science
- next-generation energy storage for transportation
- grid-energy storage capabilities and innovations toward use on demand
• Develop and maintain a network of government, academic, and industry contacts that lead to the discovery of new opportunities in energy storage
• Identify critical research collaborations with various Berkeley Lab scientific disciplines, fellow national laboratories, UC Berkeley, other academic institutions, and public and private sector entities
• Work with policymakers in developing pathways for the applications of energy storage in Grid applications in pursuit of a resilient energy infrastructure
• Represent Berkeley Lab energy storage efforts within Berkeley Lab as well as to UC Berkeley and other UCs, UCOP, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), other relevant federal and state agencies, and internal groups
• Engage with and lead scientific community activities related to energy storage
What is Required:
• Advanced degree in chemistry, material sciences, physics, engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and professional experience
• Recognized as an expert and leader in the energy storage field
• Outstanding track record of funding and initiative development
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills and ability to work with a diverse set of scientific and non-technical stakeholders
• Demonstrated ability to bring together large teams
• Demonstrated skills in intellectual leadership, communication of complex scientific concepts, and management of multi-disciplinary teams
• Must be intuitive and possess the ability to challenge the status quo and find synergy from different ideas and approaches, develop approaches required for successful implementation, and mitigate constraints affecting success
• Experience in strategic planning associated with complex challenges requiring diverse expertise
Additional Desired Qualifications:
• Ph.D.or master’s degree in chemistry, material sciences, physics, engineering, or a related field.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
Notes:
• This position is a full time career position that is appointed by and serves at the discretion of the Laboratory Director, and this appointment is at will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause
