AABE Atlanta Observes Black Energy Awareness Month

September 30, 2014

As the winter heating season approaches, AABE Atlanta celebrates Black Energy Awareness Month (BEAM), which begins Oct. 1, by offering energy saving tips for consumers. BEAM celebrates the contributions of African-Americans to the energy industry, drives awareness of the benefits of energy efficiency, and helps ensure the success of current and future energy professionals.

“This month-long observance gives us a chance to heighten awareness of the benefits of energy efficiency and provide communities, students and professionals with information specific to savings and careers in energy,” said Rodney Russell, AABE Atlanta president. “It’s a full court press on energy – from community to students to our members.”

AABE Atlanta encourages communities to take advantage of the following energy efficiency tips:

• Take advantage of the sun’s heat - Open curtains during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat and light your home. Be sure to close them at night to reduce the chill from cold windows.

• Cover drafty windows – Use a heavy-duty, clear plastic sheet on the inside of your window frames during the cold winter months.

• Adjust your temperature – Set your thermostat to 68 degrees. Add a programmable thermostat to automatically set your home temperature.

• Maintain your heating systems - Have your heating system serviced by a professional during the change of seasons.

• Reduce heat loss from the fireplace - Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning.

• Lower your water heater cost - Set your water heater temperature to 120°F.

• Get an energy audit from a certified professional - Your electric utility company may provide a customized audit for your home and show you ways to save money and energy throughout your house. Ask your provider if you qualify.

• Insulate floors, attics and attic stairs - Make sure the warm air stays in and the cold air remains outside.

• Use energy – efficient lighting – Choose energy-saving LED or CFL lighting for your indoor and outdoor lighting needs. The association also plans weekly online activities and updates throughout the month to commemorate BEAM, which will be available on the website at www.aabe.org/atlanta and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/AABEAtlantaChapter
