DAC VP Graces Cover of Diversity Employment Magazine

November 9, 2008
Jerome Davis recently graced the cover of African-American Career World: The Diversity Employment Magazine (Winter/Spring 2008). Davis is the area manager of community and local government affairs at Xcel Energy and vice president of the Denver Area Chapter of AABE®. In an article titled “Energy, Gas, and Utilities: Careers in the Power Industry”, Davis discusses how he made his way up in the ranks at Xcel Energy and what advice he gives to students who are still trying to decide what they want to do. In the 24 years Davis has been with Xcel Energy he has worked his way up from engineering to accounting, then to marketing, from there to procurement, after which he became supplier diversity manager, and finally his current position as area manager. Davis has a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and financing from the University of Denver, and a MBA with an emphasis on accounting, financing, and marketing from Regis University. He began working for Xcel Energy as a junior in college who was initially looking for part-time work while he finished school. He was eventually offered an engineering clerical job for $11 an hour; which he accepted and finished school at night. In the cover story, Davis states “As far as I was concerned, I had hit the lotto! ...I would not suggest that route for everyone. But if I were to give advice, I’d say finish school first.” The engineering clerical job was a springboard to a very successful, diverse career at Xcel Energy. Davis not only encourages students to stay in school, he also emphasizes the importance of the basic core areas – math, science and English – as they will allow you to do just about anything you choose. He acknowledges that not everyone who enters college has a clear plan or path in mind and, even if you do, no one knows what opportunities the future holds. He is the perfect example. Davis is a board member of the Denver Metro Chamber Foundation, Metro Denver Sports Commission, Community College of Denver Foundation, and the Presidents Roundtable for Johnson & Wales University. In addition, he is a Walter Kaitz Foundation Fellow and a graduate of the leadership programs for both the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and Aurora Chamber of Commerce.
